I Will Love Them Freely

God's mercy speaks to people who have wandered. HOSEA 14:4 (ESV) says, "I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them."

Apostasy is not a light word. It speaks of turning away. Hosea is full of the pain of unfaithfulness, yet it also reveals the astonishing mercy of God. He does not merely say He will tolerate the returning people. He says He will heal them and love them freely.

That is grace beyond what we would invent. Human love often becomes guarded after betrayal. But God's covenant mercy is deeper than our patterns. He can heal the very unfaithfulness that broke us. He can love freely, not because sin was harmless, but because His mercy is His own.

JEREMIAH 3:22 (ESV) says, "Return, O faithless sons; I will heal your faithlessness." The call to return is joined to the promise to heal. God does not only demand change from a distance; He provides mercy for the heart that cannot heal itself.

If you have wandered, let this both convict and comfort you. Wandering is serious. But the Lord's mercy is real. Return to Him. He is able to heal what rebellion damaged, and He loves freely.

There is no healing in pretending the wandering was small. But there is also no healing in believing the wound is beyond God. The Lord names apostasy truthfully and still says, "I will heal." That is mercy with power in it. Bring Him the places where your love grew cold, your obedience became selective, and your heart drifted. His free love is not fragile. It can restore what sin has disordered.

This is love we could never earn. It is not shallow affection that ignores the wound; it is holy love that heals it. Return with honesty, and let God do what only mercy can do.
