Seek First the Kingdom
MATTHEW 6:33 (ESV)
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness."
Jesus does not simply tell anxious people to stop worrying. He gives them a greater first thing. MATTHEW 6:33 (ESV) says, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
Anxiety often rearranges priorities. It pushes needs, fears, bills, outcomes, people's opinions, and tomorrow's uncertainties to the centre. Jesus does not deny real needs. He knows His people need food, drink, and clothing. But He refuses to let need become lord.
To seek first the kingdom is to bring life under God's reign before everything else. It means obedience is not postponed until life feels secure. Righteousness is not treated as optional when pressure rises. The kingdom comes first, not after comfort has been guaranteed.
LUKE 12:31 (ESV) says, "Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you." Scripture gives the same emphasis: the Father knows our needs, and His children are called to trust Him while pursuing what matters eternally.
This is a gracious challenge. The Lord is not asking you to pretend needs are not real. He is asking you not to let them rule you. Seek first His kingdom today: in your decisions, speech, money, work, family, hidden life, and obedience. The Father is not blind to the rest.
Seeking first is proved in ordinary moments. It shows when obedience costs comfort, when generosity challenges fear, when forgiveness confronts pride, and when prayer interrupts panic. The kingdom is not first because life is easy. The kingdom is first because God is King. Put Him back in the place anxiety has tried to occupy, and trust your Father with what He already knows.
This does not mean you will never feel pressure again. It means pressure no longer gets the throne. When the kingdom is first, even necessary concerns are placed under God's rule. The heart learns to ask, "What honours Him here?" before it asks, "How do I protect myself?"
