Rivers of Living Water

Jesus stands and cries out in JOHN 7:37 (ESV), "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink." He does not whisper a small offer to the spiritually impressive. He calls openly to the thirsty.

The next verse says, "Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." John explains that Jesus was speaking about the Spirit. This is not self-generated religious energy. It is the life of God given by the Spirit to those who come to Christ.

Thirst must be admitted. That is often where pride resists. We would rather look strong than confess spiritual dryness. We would rather manage appearances than come needy. But the invitation of Jesus is not for those pretending to be full. It is for anyone who thirsts.

EZEKIEL 47:9 (ESV) speaks of waters that bring life wherever they go. The imagery of living water runs deep through Scripture: God gives life where barrenness once ruled.

Come to Christ and drink. Do not try to manufacture living water from discipline alone, emotion alone, or effort alone. Discipline matters, but Christ is the source. The Spirit gives life. When the heart is dry, the answer is not to pretend. The answer is to come to Him.

There is also overflow in this promise. Jesus speaks of living water flowing from the heart. Grace does not only keep us alive privately; it begins to make us a blessing to others. A heart filled by the Spirit can carry life into dry conversations, dry homes, dry places, and weary relationships. Come thirsty, and let Christ make you alive in ways that cannot be self-produced.

This is far deeper than a temporary emotional lift. The Spirit forms life where there was barrenness, worship where there was dryness, and witness where there was shame. Christ does not run out of living water.
