Hate Evil, Love the Lord

Love for God cannot remain neutral toward evil. PSALM 97:10 (ESV) says, "O you who love the LORD, hate evil!" That is not a call to harshness toward people. It is a call to holy agreement with God.

Our culture often teaches people to tolerate whatever they desire. Even believers can begin treating sin as manageable, familiar, or private, as long as it does not appear too destructive. But Scripture connects love for the Lord with hatred of evil. If we love Him, we cannot make peace with what opposes Him.

This must begin close to home. It is easier to hate evil in society than to hate pride in our own hearts, bitterness in our own speech, lust in our own habits, greed in our own choices, or unbelief in our own reactions. Holy hatred of evil starts with surrender before God.

PROVERBS 8:13 (ESV) says, "The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil." Reverence for God changes what the heart can comfortably entertain.

Do not confuse grace with permission to love what Christ died to defeat. God is merciful to sinners, and His mercy trains us to turn from sin. Love the Lord honestly. Hate evil truly. Cling to Him, because He preserves the lives of His saints.

This hatred of evil must remain clean. It cannot become hatred of people, pride in ourselves, or harsh delight in exposing others. The closer we draw to the Lord, the more we grieve sin first in ourselves. Holy hatred of evil should make us repentant, watchful, and dependent. It should make us love Christ more because He is the One who frees us from what would ruin us.

Let the Lord sharpen your conscience without hardening your heart. A clean conscience learns to say no quickly, but it also stays tender toward mercy. Hate evil because you love the Lord who is good.
