Let Love Be Genuine

Biblical love is not sentimental pretending. ROMANS 12:9 (ESV) says, "Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good." In one sentence, Scripture joins love, holiness, and discernment.

Genuine love cannot celebrate what destroys people. It does not call evil good in order to appear kind. But genuine love also refuses coldness, pride, and hypocrisy. It is not harsh truth without compassion or soft compassion without truth. It is love shaped by God.

This challenges the way we deal with people. Sometimes we say we love someone, but we only love comfort, agreement, or control. Genuine love seeks their good before God. It can encourage, forgive, warn, serve, and stay patient without surrendering conviction.

1 PETER 1:22 (ESV) says, "love one another earnestly from a pure heart." Earnest love comes from a heart being purified by truth. It is not performance.

Ask whether your love has become selective, shallow, or dishonest. The Lord calls His people to something better: love without pretending, hatred of evil without cruelty, and loyalty to what is good without compromise. This kind of love is only possible as grace reshapes the heart.

Genuine love will sometimes feel costly because it refuses easy masks. It may require apology, patience, boundaries, generosity, correction, or quiet faithfulness when no one praises it. But false love is cheaper only at first. In the end it cannot heal, build, or honour God. Let love be genuine enough to tell the truth and tender enough to carry that truth with grace.

This kind of love will search motives. Are we speaking because we want to restore, or because we want to win? Are we silent because it is wise, or because we fear people? Genuine love lives before God.
