Do Not Love the World

John gives a direct command in 1 JOHN 2:15 (ESV): "Do not love the world or the things in the world." He is not speaking about loving people, because Scripture commands that. He is warning against the world system in rebellion against God.

This matters because worldly love can feel normal. The desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and pride of life can dress themselves up as ambition, freedom, style, confidence, or success. But John says these are not from the Father.

The world offers immediate shine but no eternal weight. It trains the heart to crave what is passing away. If we are not watchful, we can begin to measure life by the very things Scripture says are temporary.

JAMES 4:4 (ESV) says, "friendship with the world is enmity with God." That is strong language because divided loyalty is spiritually dangerous. We cannot love the world as master and love the Father as Lord.

Grace does not call us out of the world to make us empty. It calls us into the love of the Father, which is better. Do not give your heart to what is passing away. The one who does the will of God abides forever.

This is not about withdrawing from ordinary life or despising God's good gifts. It is about refusing the world's rebellion as our pattern and prize. The Father gives better loves, better desires, and a better future. If your heart has become too impressed with what is passing away, ask God to restore eternal sight. The world is loud, but it is temporary. The will of God remains.

The danger is not always obvious rebellion. Sometimes it is slow affection: becoming entertained by what should grieve us, impressed by what should not own us, and numb to what God calls holy. Guard your love.
