Stand Firm in Love

Christian strength is not loveless hardness. 1 CORINTHIANS 16:13-14 (ESV) says, "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."

Paul brings together courage and love. We need both. Watchfulness without love becomes suspicion. Love without watchfulness becomes careless. Strength without love becomes pride. Love without strength becomes easily moved by pressure. Scripture calls us to a stronger, cleaner way.

To stand firm in the faith means truth is not up for sale. The believer cannot be pushed around by every fear, trend, emotion, or opinion. But the command that follows is just as important: let all be done in love. Not some things. All things.

GALATIANS 5:13 (ESV) says, "through love serve one another." Christian freedom is not self-rule. It becomes loving service under Christ.

Ask where you need more courage and where you need more love. Some people must stop confusing gentleness with compromise. Others must stop confusing harshness with faithfulness. The Lord calls His people to stand firm with hearts shaped by love. That is strength under grace.

This balance is desperately needed. The church does not serve Christ well by becoming soft on truth, and it does not display Christ well by becoming hard in spirit. Jesus is full of grace and truth. Those who follow Him must learn firmness that does not lose tenderness, and tenderness that does not surrender truth. Let all that you do be done in love.

Standing firm is not mainly about proving strength to others. It is about faithfulness before God. Love keeps firmness from becoming self-righteous, and truth keeps love from becoming empty sentiment.
