When I Am Afraid
PSALM 56:3-4 (ESV)
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."
Faith does not always begin with calm feelings. David says in PSALM 56:3 (ESV), "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." He does not deny fear. He brings fear under trust.
That is important for people who feel guilty because they are afraid. Scripture does not pretend God's people never tremble. It teaches trembling hearts where to turn. Fear may rise, but it does not have to reign.
David continues, "In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid." Trust is anchored in God and His Word, not in the absence of danger. The circumstances may still be real, but God becomes more real to the heart.
PSALM 34:4 (ESV) says, "I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears." Deliverance begins by seeking the Lord, not by pretending fear is not there.
When fear comes, do not let it drive you into panic, control, or silence. Speak truth to your soul. Put your trust in God. Praise His Word before the outcome changes. The Lord is not disappointed by a weak heart that runs to Him. He teaches fearful people to trust.
Trust may begin as a choice made with shaking hands. That still matters. You can say, "When I am afraid," and still choose where fear will be taken. The Lord does not require emotional perfection before you trust Him. He invites you to place the weight of your fear on His faithfulness, again and again, until fear no longer gets the final word.
Do not wait until fear disappears before you pray. Trust often grows while fear is still present. Put your fear into words before God, then put God's Word before your fear.
