WALKING IN TRUTH, NOT FEELINGS

Jun 3, 2026

EPHESIANS 4:17 (ESV)

“Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.”

If nothing changes in how you think, nothing will change in how you live. That is why EPHESIANS 4:17 (ESV) — “no longer walk… in the futility of their minds” goes straight to the root, because before behaviour shifts, thinking has to.

Old behaviours are not random, they are the result of a mindset that has been shaped over time, and if that mindset stays the same, your life will keep moving in the same direction. This is why Scripture continues by showing what that mindset leads to, because EPHESIANS 4:18 (ESV) — “they are darkened in their understanding… alienated from the life of God” reveals that wrong thinking does not just affect behaviour, it affects your connection to God.

When you ignore truth long enough, your heart becomes less sensitive to it. That is why EPHESIANS 4:19 (ESV) — “they have become callous” shows what happens over time, because what once convicted you no longer affects you in the same way, and you begin to settle into patterns that you were never meant to stay in.

But then the shift comes, and this is where everything changes, because EPHESIANS 4:20 (ESV) — “But that is not the way you learned Christ!” draws a clear line between who you were and who you are now meant to be.

Following Christ is not about adding Him onto your old life, it is about leaving the old way behind.

That is why it continues by saying EPHESIANS 4:22 (ESV) — “put off your old self”, because change requires removal. You cannot hold onto what kept you bound and step into what sets you free at the same time.

And it does not stop there, because EPHESIANS 4:23 (ESV) — “be renewed in the spirit of your minds” shows that transformation is ongoing. This is not a one-time decision, it is a daily process of allowing your thinking to be shaped by truth instead of by the world.

Then it brings it to the outcome, because EPHESIANS 4:24 (ESV) — “put on the new self, created after the likeness of God” shows that this is not just about stopping something, it is about becoming someone.

This is where the Holy Spirit leads, not by forcing you, but by guiding you. Not by restricting you, but by directing you into something better.

But if you choose to live by your emotions instead, they will take control. And emotions are unstable, they shift, they react, and they do not always align with what is true.

That is why you cannot build your life on how you feel.

You have to build it on truth.

Because truth does not move when your emotions do, and when you begin to live from it, it begins to shape how you think, how you respond, and how you move forward.

This brings it to one clear place, because you cannot walk in both at the same time. You cannot stay in the old way of thinking and expect a new way of living.

One leads you back.

The other leads you forward.

And when you choose to put off the old, allow your mind to be renewed, and step into what God is leading you into, you will not just see change on the surface, you will experience transformation at the root, because you are no longer living from what feels right in the moment, but from what is right in God.

And that is what will set you free.
