PRAYER IS RELATIONSHIP

MATTHEW 6:6 (ESV)

“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Many people overcomplicate prayer. They think they need perfect words, long speeches, or some special spiritual ability before they can come honestly before God. Yet prayer was never meant to be performance. It was always meant to be relationship.

Jesus says in MATTHEW 6:6 (ESV), “pray to your Father who is in secret.” That changes everything because prayer is not about trying to impress God. It is about coming before your Father honestly, openly, and sincerely.

There are people who avoid prayer because they feel ashamed, distant from God, spiritually inconsistent, or unsure what to say. Some people only pray when life becomes painful or when they desperately need help. Others have allowed prayer to become routine words without real connection behind them. But God never intended prayer to become empty repetition. He desires real relationship with His people, the kind where a person can come before Him honestly about fear, temptation, confusion, disappointment, weakness, frustration, and pain without pretending to have everything together.

Prayer is not about hiding the real condition of your heart from God because He already sees it fully and still invites you closer. Many believers become spiritually exhausted because they are trying to carry burdens alone that were never meant to be carried without God. Anxiety increases, fear grows louder, and pressure builds internally, yet instead of bringing those things honestly before God, many people try handling everything through their own strength first. But prayer shifts the focus and reminds people they were never meant to live independent from the One who created them.

There are also seasons where prayer may feel quiet. Moments where emotions feel dry or where answers do not come as quickly as expected. Yet relationship with God cannot be built only on feelings. Sometimes the deepest faithfulness is simply continuing to come before Him consistently even when emotions feel weak because prayer is not valuable only when it feels emotional, it is valuable because you are meeting with God.

Jesus continually withdrew to pray throughout His earthly ministry. If even Christ Himself prioritised time alone with the Father, how much more do believers need closeness with God daily? Prayer changes things externally at times, but it also changes people internally. God strengthens hearts, renews minds, brings peace, gives wisdom, convicts, comforts, and draws people closer to Himself through relationship with Him.

Yet God never intended believers to carry life disconnected from Him.

Prayer is an invitation into relationship.

Into dependence.

Into closeness with the Father.

So stop overcomplicating prayer, stop believing you need perfect words, and stop hiding the real condition of your heart from God. Come honestly before Him, speak openly with Him, sit quietly in His presence, and allow prayer to become more than a routine because it is an invitation into real relationship with the God who already knows you fully and still desires closeness with you.
