THE BLESSING OF OBEDIENCE

Obedience is one of the clearest expressions of trust. It is easy to say we trust God when everything is going well, but true trust is often revealed when God asks us to do something that stretches us, challenges us, or requires us to surrender something we would rather hold onto. Throughout Scripture, God continually calls His people to trust Him enough to follow His leading, even when they cannot see the full picture.

The story of Abraham is a powerful example of this. God repeatedly called Abraham to take steps of faith without revealing every detail of what lay ahead. Abraham was asked to leave familiar surroundings, trust God's promises, and walk a path that often required patience and perseverance. He did not always know how God would fulfil His promises, but he chose to obey because he trusted the character of the One who had made them.

Many of us want God's guidance, God's provision, and God's blessing, but we sometimes struggle when obedience requires sacrifice. We can find ourselves asking why God has not moved in a certain situation while overlooking the areas where He has already spoken. There are times when the next step in our journey is not waiting for a new word from God but responding to the word He has already given.

This is why PROVERBS 3:5–6 (ESV) reminds us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Obedience and trust cannot be separated. We obey because we believe that God's wisdom is greater than our own and that His plans for us are better than anything we could create for ourselves.

Obedience is not always comfortable. Sometimes it means waiting when we would rather move forward. Sometimes it means forgiving when we would rather hold onto hurt. Sometimes it means remaining faithful in ordinary things when we are looking for something bigger. Yet it is often through these seemingly small acts of obedience that God does some of His deepest work within us.

Even Jesus demonstrated the importance of obedience. HEBREWS 5:8 (ESV) says, “Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.” If obedience was part of Christ's earthly walk, we should not be surprised when it becomes part of ours. God uses obedience to shape our character, strengthen our faith, and draw us into a deeper relationship with Him.

The blessing of obedience is not simply about receiving something from God. The greatest blessing is found in walking closely with Him. As we learn to follow His Word, listen to the Holy Spirit, and trust His direction, we begin to experience the peace that comes from knowing we are walking the path He has prepared for us.

There may be an area of your life today where God is asking you to trust Him more fully. It may be something that seems small or something that feels significant. Whatever it is, remember that God is faithful. He has never abandoned those who place their trust in Him, and He will not begin with you.

The path of obedience is not always the easiest path, but it is always the safest path because it keeps us close to the heart of God. When we trust Him enough to obey, we often discover that what seemed like a sacrifice becomes an opportunity to experience His faithfulness in a deeper way than we ever imagined.
