HOW TO RESIST EVIL
EPHESIANS 6:10–18 (ESV)
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
The Christian life is not a playground. It is a battleground. Many people come to faith expecting that following Jesus will remove every struggle, temptation, and challenge. Yet Scripture teaches the opposite. The moment we begin walking with Christ, we step into a spiritual battle. The good news is that God has not left us defenceless. He has provided everything we need to stand firm.
One of the greatest mistakes believers make is trying to fight spiritual battles in their own strength. We rely on willpower, determination, or self-discipline alone, only to find ourselves exhausted and discouraged. Paul begins by reminding us where our strength comes from. He writes, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” Victory is not found in our ability. It is found in God's power.
The enemy's goal has always been to draw people away from God. Jesus described him in JOHN 10:10 (ESV), saying, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Satan seeks to bring destruction, confusion, and bondage, while Christ came to bring life, freedom, and restoration.
This is why Paul instructs believers to put on the whole armour of God. Every piece points us back to our dependence on Christ. We need the belt of truth because deception is one of the enemy's greatest weapons. We need the breastplate of righteousness because our identity is found in what Christ has done, not in our failures. We need the shield of faith because doubts, fears, and lies will come. We need the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, because truth exposes darkness and equips us to stand firm.
Too often people try to resist temptation while neglecting the very things that strengthen them spiritually. We cannot expect to stand strong if we are disconnected from God's Word, neglecting prayer, and trying to walk through life on our own. Just as a soldier prepares before the battle begins, believers must cultivate their relationship with God daily.
Paul also reminds us that our struggle is not ultimately against people. The battles we face are often deeper than what we see on the surface. This is why our response must be spiritual rather than merely emotional. Prayer, Scripture, worship, obedience, and dependence on God are not simply religious activities; they are weapons God has given His people.
This truth is reinforced in COLOSSIANS 1:13 (ESV), which says, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.” Through Christ, believers no longer belong to the kingdom of darkness. We belong to the King who has already secured the ultimate victory.
That does not mean the battle disappears. It means we fight from a position of hope rather than fear. We do not fight for victory; we fight from the victory Christ has already won through His death and resurrection.
There will be days when temptation feels strong. There will be moments when discouragement, fear, or doubt try to gain a foothold. In those moments, remember that God has not called you to fight alone. He has given you His Spirit, His Word, His promises, and His presence.
The key to resisting evil is not focusing on the power of the enemy. It is focusing on the power of God. Stay close to Christ, remain grounded in His Word, and depend on His strength. The One who lives within you is greater than anything that stands against you.
