PICK UP YOUR CROSS

Following Jesus is one of the greatest invitations a person can receive, but it is also one of the most costly. Jesus never presented discipleship as something easy or convenient. Instead, He spoke honestly about what it means to belong to Him. In Luke 9, Jesus tells His followers that if they want to come after Him, they must deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him.

When Jesus spoke about taking up a cross, His listeners understood exactly what He meant. The cross was not a symbol of comfort or convenience. It was a symbol of surrender, sacrifice, and death. Jesus was teaching that following Him requires a willingness to place His will above our own.

This is often where the real challenge begins. Our natural tendency is to put ourselves first. We want our plans, our timing, and our preferences. Yet Jesus calls His followers to a different way of living. He calls us to trust Him enough to surrender control and follow wherever He leads.

Notice that Jesus says we are to take up our cross daily. Discipleship is not a one-time decision that is never revisited. It is a daily choice to follow Christ. Every day we are faced with opportunities to obey God, resist temptation, forgive others, show grace, and place His will above our own. These choices may seem small, but they shape the direction of our lives.

Jesus then gives a powerful warning and promise. He says, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” The world teaches people to build life around themselves. Jesus teaches that true life is found when we surrender ourselves to Him. What appears to be loss in the eyes of the world often becomes gain in the kingdom of God.

This same truth is reflected in GALATIANS 2:20 (ESV), “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Paul understood that the Christian life is not about self-improvement. It is about a new life that is found in Christ.

Taking up our cross does not mean carrying every burden alone. It does not mean earning God's love through suffering. Jesus has already accomplished what we could never accomplish for ourselves. Rather, taking up our cross means willingly submitting our lives to His leadership and trusting that His way is better than our own.

There will be times when obedience is costly. There will be moments when following Christ means swimming against the current of culture, resisting temptation, or choosing faithfulness when compromise would be easier. Yet Jesus never asks His followers to walk a path He was unwilling to walk Himself. He carried the cross before He called us to carry ours.

The call of Jesus remains the same today. Deny yourself. Take up your cross. Follow Him. The path may not always be easy, but it leads to the One who is life itself.

When Christ becomes the centre of our lives, we discover that surrender is not the loss we feared. It is the beginning of becoming who God created us to be.
