LIVING ON THE FAULT LINE

We live in a world that is constantly changing. Opinions change. Cultures change. Technology changes. Circumstances change. Even people can change unexpectedly. What seems secure one day can feel uncertain the next. Because of this, many people spend their lives searching for something stable to stand on.

The reality is that much of life can feel like living on a fault line. Things that appear solid can suddenly shift beneath our feet. Relationships can become strained. Health can deteriorate. Financial situations can change. Plans can fall apart. The uncertainty of life often reminds us how little control we truly have.

This is why Hebrews 13:8 is such a powerful verse. In the middle of a changing world, believers are given an unchanging foundation. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” While everything around us may shift, Christ remains constant. His character does not change. His promises do not change. His faithfulness does not change.

Throughout Scripture we see this truth repeatedly. The same God who was faithful to Abraham remained faithful to Moses. The same God who sustained David was still faithful in the days of the prophets. The same Jesus who walked with His disciples is the same Jesus who walks with His people today.

This is why MALACHI 3:6 (ESV) says, “For I the LORD do not change.” God's consistency is one of the greatest sources of comfort for believers. We never have to wonder whether He will stop being loving, stop being faithful, or stop keeping His promises. His nature remains the same.

When uncertainty comes, our natural instinct is often to focus on what is changing around us. We become consumed by circumstances, possibilities, and fears about the future. Yet Scripture continually redirects our attention back to God. The answer to instability is not finding better circumstances. The answer is anchoring ourselves to the One who never changes.

This does not mean life will always be easy. The Bible never promises that believers will avoid difficulties. In fact, Jesus warned that trouble would come. What Scripture does promise is that God will remain faithful through every season. His presence does not disappear when circumstances become difficult.

This is why PSALM 46:1 (ESV) declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Notice that God is not merely a help in the past or a help in the future. He is a present help. He is with His people in the middle of the situation they are facing right now.

Many of the things we place our confidence in are temporary. Success can fade. Possessions can disappear. Human approval can change overnight. Yet Christ remains the same. He is the solid rock upon which believers can build their lives.

Living on the fault line does not mean living in fear. It means recognising that while the world around us may be unstable, the God we trust is not. Our confidence is not rooted in circumstances remaining predictable. Our confidence is rooted in the unchanging character of Jesus Christ.

When life feels uncertain, return to what you know is true. Christ is still faithful. Christ is still sovereign. Christ is still present. The same Saviour who carried His people through every generation remains able to carry you today.

The ground beneath you may shift.

But the One holding you never will.
