THE LIGHT OF GOD

One of the most powerful descriptions of God in Scripture is found in these verses. John writes, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” Light represents purity, truth, holiness, and life. Darkness represents sin, deception, and separation from God. John makes it clear that there is no mixture within God's character. He is completely holy, completely pure, and completely trustworthy.

This truth has important implications for those who follow Christ. John explains that it is possible for someone to claim fellowship with God while continuing to walk in darkness. In other words, faith is not simply about what we say. Genuine faith affects how we live. Our lives should increasingly reflect the God we claim to know.

Walking in the light does not mean living a perfect life. Every believer still struggles, fails, and needs God's grace. Walking in the light means living honestly before God. It means allowing His truth to expose areas that need to change rather than hiding them. It means responding to conviction with repentance instead of resistance.

One of the reasons people often remain trapped in unhealthy patterns is because darkness thrives in secrecy. Things hidden from the light tend to grow stronger. Yet when those same things are brought before God, His truth begins exposing what needs to change and His grace provides the power to move forward.

This is why JOHN 3:20–21 (ESV) says, “For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light.” God does not expose things to condemn His people. He exposes them so that healing, freedom, and transformation can take place.

John also highlights a beautiful promise for those who walk in the light. He says that “the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” The foundation of the Christian life is not our ability to make ourselves righteous. It is the finished work of Christ. Through His death and resurrection, forgiveness is available to all who place their trust in Him.

Walking in the light also affects our relationships with others. John says that when we walk in the light, “we have fellowship with one another.” Truth and transparency create genuine community. When people stop pretending, stop hiding, and begin walking honestly before God, healthier relationships become possible.

The Christian life is a continual movement toward the light. As we grow in our relationship with Christ, He reveals more of His character and more of the areas where He wants to work within us. This process can be uncomfortable at times, but it is always motivated by His love and desire for our good.

This is why PSALM 119:105 (ESV) says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God has not left His people to walk through life in darkness. He has given His Word, His Spirit, and His truth to guide them.

Every day we are faced with a choice. We can resist the light or we can walk in it. We can hide from God's truth or allow it to shape us. We can cling to darkness or move toward the One who is light.

The closer we walk with Christ, the more we discover that His light does not drive us away.

It leads us home.
