LOVE GOD ABOVE ALL ELSE

When Jesus was asked which commandment was the most important, He did not point to a long list of rules or religious duties. Instead, He went straight to the heart of the matter. Above everything else, believers are called to love God.

This is significant because love shapes everything else. The way we live, the choices we make, the priorities we pursue, and the way we treat other people are all influenced by what we love most. Jesus knew that if God truly has first place in a person's heart, everything else begins to find its proper place as well.

Notice the extent of the command. Jesus says we are to love God with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength. This is not a partial commitment. God is not looking for a small corner of our lives while we reserve the rest for ourselves. He desires our whole hearts. He calls us into a relationship where every area of life is brought under His lordship.

One of the challenges believers face is that there are many things competing for first place. Careers, possessions, relationships, ambitions, comfort, approval, and countless other things can slowly become more important than our relationship with God. Most of these things are not necessarily wrong in themselves, but they become dangerous when they take the place that belongs to God alone.

This is why Jesus later says in MATTHEW 6:21 (ESV), “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Whatever we value most will eventually shape the direction of our lives. If our greatest treasure is found in temporary things, our hearts will continually be pulled toward temporary things. If our greatest treasure is found in God, our lives will increasingly reflect His priorities.

Loving God is not merely an emotional feeling. It is demonstrated through trust, obedience, worship, and devotion. Jesus said in JOHN 14:15 (ESV), “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Genuine love for God expresses itself through a desire to follow Him and honour Him.

The encouraging truth is that our love for God is always a response to His love for us. Scripture teaches that “we love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). God does not ask people to earn His love. He invites them to respond to the love He has already demonstrated through Jesus Christ.

As believers grow in their relationship with God, they begin discovering that nothing else can truly satisfy the deepest needs of the heart. Success fades. Possessions wear out. Human approval changes. Yet God's love remains constant. The closer we walk with Him, the more we realise that He is not simply one priority among many. He is the foundation upon which every other priority should rest.

Every day presents opportunities to examine what is receiving our attention, affection, and devotion. The question is not whether we love something. The question is what we love most.

When God takes His rightful place at the centre of our lives, everything else begins to come into proper perspective. That is why Jesus called this the greatest commandment.

Not because God needs our love.

But because we were created to find our greatest joy, purpose, and fulfilment in Him.
