BUILD ON THE ROCK
MATTHEW 7:24-27 (ESV)
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Jesus finishes the Sermon on the Mount with a simple but powerful picture. Two men build a house. One builds on rock and the other builds on sand. Both houses face the same storm. The rain falls, the floods come, and the winds beat against both homes. The difference is not the storm. The difference is the foundation.
Life works the same way.
Every person will face difficulties at some point. Disappointments will come. Challenges will come. Unexpected circumstances will come. None of us are exempt from the storms of life. The question is not whether storms will come but what our lives are built upon when they do.
It is possible to build a life on many different things. Some people build on success. Others build on money, relationships, reputation, ability, or their own strength. The problem is that these foundations can shift when pressure comes. What feels secure today can quickly disappear tomorrow.
Jesus points us to a different foundation. He says the wise person is the one who hears His words and puts them into practice. A strong foundation is not built by simply hearing God's Word. It is built by believing it, trusting it, and living it out day by day.
The storms revealed what was already underneath the houses. In the same way, difficult seasons often reveal what we have truly been relying on. Crisis has a way of exposing whether our trust is in ourselves or in God.
PSALM 18:2 (ESV)
"The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge."
God has always been the secure foundation for His people. He remains faithful when circumstances change, dependable when life feels uncertain, and present when storms begin to rage around us.
Perhaps life feels steady for you right now, or perhaps you are already walking through a storm. Either way, the challenge remains the same. Keep building your life on Christ. Spend time in His Word. Follow His leading. Trust His promises. Obey what He says.
Storms will come and go, but a life built on Jesus has a foundation that will not be shaken.
Build on the Rock.
And when the storms come, you will discover that He is more than enough.
