GOD WITH US — PART 1 — THE SHELTER OF THE MOST HIGH

Life has a way of exposing where we place our trust. When everything is going well, it is easy to feel secure. Yet when uncertainty arrives, when difficulties come unexpectedly, or when circumstances begin to shift beneath our feet, we quickly discover what we have been relying on.

Psalm 91 points us to the safest place a believer can be. The psalmist writes, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” This is not the picture of someone occasionally visiting God when life becomes difficult. It is the picture of someone who remains close to Him, lives in fellowship with Him, and finds security in His presence.

The word “dwells” is important. A dwelling place is somewhere we remain, not somewhere we visit briefly. God does not invite His people to run to Him only during emergencies. He invites them into a daily relationship where they learn to trust Him in every season of life.

Many people spend their lives searching for security in things that cannot ultimately provide it. Some trust in finances. Others trust in relationships, careers, abilities, or carefully laid plans. While none of these things are wrong in themselves, they were never designed to carry the weight of our deepest security. Circumstances can change, people can disappoint us, and plans can fail, but God remains faithful.

This is why the psalmist declares, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” A refuge is a place of protection. A fortress is a place of safety and strength. The psalmist is reminding himself that his confidence is not rooted in his circumstances but in the character of God.

This same truth appears throughout Scripture. PROVERBS 18:10 (ESV) says, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” God's people have always found security, not because life was easy, but because God was present.

The promise of Psalm 91 does not mean believers will never face hardship. The Bible is filled with faithful men and women who walked through trials, suffering, and uncertainty. The promise is that they did not walk through those things alone. God's presence remained with them, strengthening them, guiding them, and sustaining them.

There are moments when fear tries to convince us that we must carry every burden ourselves. There are seasons when anxiety whispers that everything depends on us. Psalm 91 calls us back to a different reality. It reminds us that God is our refuge, our fortress, and the One in whom we can trust completely.

The foundation of the Christian life is not self-reliance. It is God-reliance. The more we learn to dwell in His presence, the more we discover that His peace is greater than our fears and His faithfulness is greater than our uncertainties.

As we begin this series, remember this simple truth: before God guides His people, before He calms their storms, and before He reveals the next step, He first invites them to remain close to Him.

The safest place for a believer has never been a set of circumstances.

It has always been in the presence of God.
