RUN YOUR RACE

HEBREWS 12:1–2 (ESV)

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.”

The Christian life is often described as a race, but it is not a race against other people. It is not about being faster than someone else, achieving more than someone else, or comparing our progress with the people around us. Hebrews reminds believers that there is a race “set before us.” In other words, God has given each person a path to walk and a race to run.

One of the quickest ways to become discouraged is to spend too much time looking at someone else's race. Comparison has a way of stealing joy, creating frustration, and distracting us from what God is doing in our own lives. We begin measuring our progress against others rather than focusing on the work God is accomplishing within us.

This is why Hebrews tells believers to “lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely.” A runner does not carry unnecessary baggage during a race. Anything that hinders progress is removed. Some things are clearly sinful and need to be dealt with. Other things may not be sinful in themselves but still weigh us down spiritually. Distractions, unhealthy priorities, bitterness, pride, fear, and misplaced focus can all hinder our ability to run well.

The writer then says we are to “run with endurance.” Endurance is necessary because the Christian life is not a sprint. There are seasons of great joy and seasons of difficulty. There are moments when faith feels strong and moments when the journey feels challenging. Endurance is the willingness to keep following Christ regardless of the circumstances.

The key to endurance is found in the next verse. Hebrews says we are to be “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” The focus of the Christian life is not ourselves. It is Christ. The more we focus on Him, the less power distractions and comparisons have over us.

Jesus Himself is the perfect example of endurance. Hebrews goes on to say that “for the joy that was set before him endured the cross.” He remained faithful even when the path involved suffering. He continued forward because He understood the purpose before Him.

This same principle appears in GALATIANS 6:9 (ESV), which says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Faithfulness often requires perseverance. There are times when growth feels slow, prayers seem unanswered, or progress appears difficult to see. Yet God calls His people to remain faithful and continue moving forward.

One of the beautiful truths of Scripture is that God is not asking believers to run alone. The same Jesus who calls us to the race also strengthens us for it. The One who began the work is the One who promises to complete it.

Every believer's journey will look different. Some paths are marked by opportunities that others never experience. Some involve challenges that others never face. God does not compare His children to one another, and neither should we. What matters is not whether our race looks like someone else's. What matters is whether we are faithfully following Christ in the race He has given us.

There will always be reasons to become distracted. There will always be opportunities to compare yourself with others. There will always be obstacles that try to slow your progress.

Lay aside the weight.

Fix your eyes on Jesus.

And keep running the race He has set before you.
