BETTER TO GIVE — PART 1 — IT IS BETTER TO GIVE

The world often teaches us to focus on what we can get. More success, more possessions, more comfort, more recognition. Yet Jesus teaches a completely different way of living. In one simple statement, He turns the thinking of the world upside down: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

At first, this can seem difficult to understand. Most people naturally assume that receiving is where blessing is found. Yet Jesus reveals that there is a deeper joy, a deeper satisfaction, and a deeper purpose that comes through giving.

This is because giving reflects the heart of God.

From the very beginning of Scripture, we see a God who gives. He gives life, provision, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and hope. The greatest example of this is found in the Gospel itself. JOHN 3:16 (ESV) says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” The heart of God is a giving heart, and as believers grow in Christ, they are called to reflect that same heart.

When Paul reminds the church of Jesus' words in Acts 20, he does so in the context of helping others. Giving is not simply about money. It is about living with an attitude that asks, "How can I serve?" rather than, "What can I gain?" It is choosing generosity over selfishness and service over self-interest.

One of the dangers of our culture is that it constantly encourages people to build life around themselves. Yet the Christian life points in the opposite direction. Jesus repeatedly taught His followers to think about others, care for others, and serve others. He demonstrated this through His own life, consistently giving His time, His attention, His compassion, and ultimately His life.

Giving also reminds us where our trust truly lies. It is difficult to live generously while clinging tightly to everything God has given us. Generosity requires faith. It requires believing that God is our provider and that we do not need to live with a mindset of scarcity and fear.

This is why 2 CORINTHIANS 9:7 (ESV) says, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” God is not interested in reluctant generosity. He desires hearts that understand the privilege of giving.

The blessing Jesus speaks about is not always a material blessing. Often it is the joy that comes from being used by God to encourage, strengthen, help, and bless someone else. There is something deeply satisfying about knowing that God has used your life to make a difference in the life of another person.

As we begin this series, it is important to remember that generosity starts in the heart before it ever reaches the hands. A generous life is not measured by the size of the gift but by the willingness of the heart.

Jesus did not say it is blessed to have more.

He said it is more blessed to give.

And when believers learn to live with that mindset, they begin reflecting the heart of the God who has given them everything.
