THE DRIFT

May 1, 2026

HEBREWS 2:1 (ESV)

“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”

Drift does not happen all at once. It is slow, quiet, and often unnoticed at the start. There is no sudden decision to move away, just small shifts over time. Less attention, less focus, less intention. And before long, distance begins to form.

HEBREWS 2:1 (ESV) warns about that kind of movement, not because it is obvious, but because it is subtle. It is possible to still be around the right things, still hearing truth, and yet slowly drifting from it internally.

That is what makes it dangerous. It does not feel like a clear step away, it feels like nothing has really changed. But direction is not always measured by what is seen outwardly. It is often revealed in what is happening beneath the surface.

Drift can come through distraction, through routine, or through becoming comfortable. What once felt clear can begin to fade. What once felt important can begin to feel distant. And over time, a person can find themselves further away than they ever intended.

But this is where things can be brought back.

Jesus does not step back when drift happens. He draws near.

REVELATION 2:4–5 (ESV) says, “But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first.”

That is not condemnation, it is correction. It is an invitation to return. Not to stay where things have drifted, but to come back to what was once clear.

Returning does not require perfection.

It starts with a decision.

And no matter how far things feel, the way back has never been closed.

There is still time to turn.

There is still grace to receive.

And there is still more ahead than what has been left behind.
