WALKING IN THE LIGHT

1 JOHN 1:5–7 (ESV)

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

Light reveals what darkness tries to hide, and that is why walking in the light is not always comfortable at first. It means allowing God to expose things that have been hidden, ignored, excused, or protected for a long time.

This is what 1 JOHN 1:5–7 (ESV) brings into focus when it says, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” God does not work through deception, confusion, or hiddenness. His nature is completely pure, completely holy, and completely true, and because of that, walking with Him requires honesty.

The passage goes on to say, “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” That is strong language, but it shows that there is a difference between knowing about God and genuinely walking with Him. Darkness thrives where things stay hidden, whether that is bitterness, compromise, sin, pride, or anything else that is being protected from the light. The longer things remain hidden, the more power they begin to carry.

But light changes that. Light exposes what darkness depends on, and while exposure can feel uncomfortable, it is actually mercy. God does not expose things to shame you, He exposes things so healing and freedom can begin.

This is why the next part matters so much: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light… the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” Notice that the cleansing is connected to walking in the light. Jesus is not calling people to pretend. He is calling them into truth.

Real freedom begins when honesty begins. That means bringing things before God instead of hiding them, confessing instead of covering, and surrendering instead of defending. What stays hidden continues to grow in darkness, but what is brought into the light can finally begin to heal.

Walking in the light does not mean perfection. It means openness before God. It means allowing Him to deal with what is real instead of protecting an image, and when you walk that way, you begin to experience what this Scripture promises: genuine fellowship with God, genuine fellowship with others, and cleansing through Jesus Christ.

Because the light of God does not come to destroy you, it comes to free you. And the moment you stop hiding and start walking honestly before Him, darkness begins to lose its grip, truth begins to take its place, and the cleansing power of Jesus starts reaching the very places you once tried hardest to keep hidden.
