WHO GOD IS

EXODUS 3:13–14 (ESV)

“Then Moses said to God, ‘If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they ask me, “What is his name?” what shall I say to them?’ God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: “I AM has sent me to you.”’”

There are many times where people shape their understanding of God around feelings, circumstances, disappointment, or what they have experienced in life. But God is not defined by human opinion, emotion, or changing situations. He is defined by who He is.

This is what makes EXODUS 3:13–14 (ESV) so powerful. When Moses asks God what he should say to the people, God responds with, “I AM WHO I AM.” He does not compare Himself to anything else because there is nothing equal to Him. He is complete within Himself, eternal, unchanging, and fully sufficient.

That means God is not one thing one day and another thing the next. He does not become less faithful because circumstances become difficult, and He does not stop being present because someone feels distant.

He remains who He is.

This is important because many people know about God, but they do not truly know His character. They may believe He exists, but still view Him through fear, shame, disappointment, or misunderstanding. Over time, that distorted view begins shaping how they respond to Him.

But God reveals Himself clearly through Scripture.

He is holy.

He is faithful.

He is merciful.

He is just.

He is loving.

And throughout the Bible, Jesus reveals the heart of the Father perfectly. When people encountered Christ, they encountered truth, compassion, correction, mercy, and authority all together.

This is why knowing who God is changes everything, because you cannot fully trust someone you do not truly know.

The more you understand His character, the more stable your faith becomes. Instead of building your understanding around emotions or circumstances, you begin building it around truth.

And truth remains steady.

This brings it to one clear place, because the question is not whether God changes, but whether your understanding of Him is rooted in who He has revealed Himself to be.

Because if your view of God is shaped only by feelings, then your faith will constantly move up and down with circumstances. But when your understanding becomes rooted in His character, you begin to stand on something far more stable.

Because God is not confused about who He is.

He is not uncertain.

He is not changing.

He is still the great I AM.

And the more you come to know Him for who He truly is, the more your life begins to find stability, direction, and peace in the unchanging nature of the One who has always been faithful from the very beginning.
