SPIRITUALLY BLIND NO MORE

JOHN 9:1-7 (ESV)

“As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’

Having said these things, He spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then He anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.”

The blind beggar woke up that morning having no idea that his entire life was about to change. To him it was another ordinary day. Another day of darkness. Another day of surviving the only life he had ever known. Yet everything changed the moment Jesus stepped into his situation.

What stands out immediately in this story is the beginning of the passage where Scripture says, “As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.” Jesus saw the man that others had likely walked past countless times before. While everyone else saw a blind beggar, Jesus saw someone whose life was about to become a testimony to the power of God.

There are people who feel invisible right now. People carrying silent struggles, addiction, shame, disappointment, fear, and spiritual exhaustion while the world keeps moving around them. Yet the same Jesus who stopped for the blind man still sees every hidden battle today. God has never lost sight of you, even in the seasons where you felt forgotten by everyone else.

The disciples immediately looked for someone to blame when they asked, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” That mindset still exists today. People often look at brokenness and immediately attach judgment, labels, or assumptions to it. However, Jesus answered them with compassion and purpose when He said, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

What a powerful reminder that God can still move through broken situations. Some of the deepest pain in a person’s life can become the very place where the power, mercy, and grace of God are revealed most clearly. The enemy may try to convince people that their past disqualifies them, but Jesus shows that God is still able to bring purpose, healing, and redemption even out of the darkest places.

Many people are spiritually blind without realising it. A person can physically see while still being unable to recognise truth, freedom, purpose, or the presence of God. Sin blinds people. Pride blinds people. Addiction blinds people. Pain and compromise slowly darken the heart until a person begins living disconnected from the life God created them for.

Then Jesus steps in.

Jesus says in this same passage, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Without Christ, people remain trapped in darkness no matter how much they try to guide themselves. Only Jesus can truly open blind eyes spiritually. Only Jesus can bring light into the places where confusion, bondage, and hopelessness once ruled.

The blind man still had to respond when Jesus told him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam.” He had to move in obedience before he could fully see. That matters because there are moments where God asks us to trust Him before we fully understand what He is doing. Obedience often comes before clarity. Faith often requires movement before the breakthrough arrives.

The beautiful ending of this passage says, “So he went and washed and came back seeing.” One encounter with Jesus changed everything. The man who once lived in darkness walked away seeing clearly because Christ stepped into his life.

Jesus still does that today.

He still opens blinded hearts. He still restores broken lives. He still reaches people trapped in shame, addiction, hopelessness, fear, and confusion. No life is beyond the reach of God’s grace.

And once Jesus opens your eyes spiritually, you can never truly be satisfied living comfortably in darkness again.
