COME OUT OF HIDING

GENESIS 3:8–10 (ESV)

“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ And he said, ‘I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.’”

One of the first things shame produces is hiding. After Adam and Eve sinned, their immediate response was not to run toward God but away from Him. Fear entered in, shame entered in, and suddenly they hid themselves from the very One who created them.

That still happens today.

People hide behind distractions, pride, anger, addiction, performance, humour, relationships, success, and spiritual appearance while quietly carrying fear, guilt, wounds, and brokenness underneath it all. Some hide from other people. Some hide from themselves. And many try hiding from God.

Yet what stands out powerfully in GENESIS 3:9 (ESV) is that God says, “Where are you?” God was not asking because He lacked information. He was inviting Adam out of hiding and back into relationship. Even after failure entered the picture, God still came looking.

Many people believe their shame disqualifies them from closeness with God. They think they need to clean themselves up first before they can come honestly before Him. Yet throughout Scripture, God continually moves toward broken people, not away from them. The enemy wants people trapped in hiding because hidden shame grows heavier in isolation, but freedom begins when people become honest before God.

There are believers who have spent years pretending they are okay externally while struggling deeply internally. Some are exhausted from trying to maintain appearances while silently battling fear, temptation, disappointment, bitterness, confusion, or guilt. Yet God never asked people to build a false version of themselves before Him. He desires truth in the heart.

And this is where grace becomes so powerful, because even in the middle of humanity’s failure, God was already moving toward redemption. The story of Scripture does not end with people hiding in the garden. It leads to Christ coming to restore what sin broke and to bring people back into relationship with the Father.

Jesus came for the broken.

For the weary.

For the person tired of hiding.

So stop hiding from the God who is calling you closer, stop believing shame has the final word over your life, and stop carrying burdens in isolation that were never meant to stay hidden in darkness. God is still calling people out of hiding, still calling them back into relationship, and still meeting honest hearts with grace, mercy, and redemption through Jesus Christ.
