DON’T DRIFT AWAY

HEBREWS 2:1 (ESV)

“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”

Drifting rarely happens suddenly. Most people do not wake up one morning and decide they no longer want God. Instead, it happens slowly through small compromises, distractions, spiritual neglect, pride, exhaustion, disappointment, or becoming too comfortable living at a distance from Him.

That is why HEBREWS 2:1 (ESV) says, “we must pay much closer attention… lest we drift away from it.” The warning is not directed at people who never heard the truth. It is directed toward people who did hear it, knew it, and still needed to stay alert so they would not slowly move away from it over time.

A boat does not need effort to drift.

It drifts naturally when nothing is anchoring it.

The same can happen spiritually. When prayer becomes inconsistent, when time with God becomes shallow, when conviction is continually ignored, and when the voice of the world becomes louder than the voice of God, people slowly begin drifting without fully realising it at first.

Some drift into compromise.

Some drift into numbness.

Some drift back into old patterns they once left behind.

And many do not notice how far they have drifted until they suddenly feel distant from the peace, clarity, and closeness with God they once had.

This is why staying spiritually intentional matters so deeply. Relationship with God cannot survive on occasional attention alone. Just as any relationship becomes distant without communication, intimacy with God weakens when people stop pursuing Him consistently. The enemy does not always try pulling people away from God through obvious rebellion. Sometimes he simply distracts them long enough for drifting to happen quietly.

There are believers who still love God but have slowly allowed other things to take first place. Pressure, work, relationships, entertainment, stress, fear, ambition, or comfort can slowly begin occupying the space that once belonged fully to God. Over time, spiritual sensitivity weakens, and what once convicted the heart no longer feels serious anymore.

But drifting does not have to become permanent.

God still calls people back.

Still restores closeness.

Still welcomes those who return to Him honestly.

And the beautiful thing about grace is that even when people drift, Jesus continues reaching toward them. He does not abandon His people the moment they struggle. He calls them back before distance hardens into complete separation.

So pay attention to the direction your life is moving in spiritually. Small compromises matter. Small distractions matter. What consistently shapes your focus will eventually shape your direction.

Stay close to God.

Stay rooted in His Word.

Stay honest before Him.

Because people rarely drift toward life, freedom, truth, and intimacy with God by accident. Those things are protected by remaining close to the One who is able to keep your heart anchored when everything around you tries to pull you away.
