REACH OUT AND TAKE HOLD

May 6, 2026

MATTHEW 14:29–31 (ESV)

“He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him…”

There are moments where you know you are being called forward, but stepping into it feels uncertain. You can see what is in front of you, but you can also feel everything around it, the pressure, the fear, the questions, and the unknown.

Peter stepped out toward Jesus, not because everything was calm, but because he heard His voice. That is what made the step possible. It was not the absence of fear, it was the presence of Jesus.

MATTHEW 14:29–31 (ESV) shows both sides of that moment. He walked, but he also began to sink when his focus shifted. That is real. Movement does not mean everything will feel steady the whole way through. There can be moments where doubt creeps in, where circumstances feel stronger than what you first stepped out in.

What stands out is not simply that Peter began to sink, but that he reached out, and Jesus responded immediately. That moment reveals something important. When things begin to feel unsteady, when confidence drops, or when fear begins to rise, the answer is not to withdraw completely, but to reach toward Him again.

Jesus does not wait for you to regain control before He steps in. He meets you in the middle of it, in the moment where things feel most uncertain. That means your step forward is not dependent on holding everything together perfectly, but on who you are stepping toward.

There will be moments where things feel uncertain, and there will be moments where your focus shifts, but that does not remove the fact that Jesus is present and reaching toward you. Taking hold of that truth changes how you move forward, not with pressure to be perfect, but with confidence that you are not alone in the step you are taking.
