ABUNDANT LIFE (NOT YOUR OWN WAY)

JOHN 10:10 (ESV)

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

There is a difference between existing and truly living, and it is not always as clear as it seems. A person can be moving through life, doing what needs to be done, staying busy, and still feel like something is missing underneath it all. There can be effort without fulfilment, movement without direction, and moments that feel empty even when everything looks in place.

JOHN 10:10 (ESV) brings that into focus by showing two completely different directions. One takes away, slowly and quietly over time, and the other gives life in a way that is full and lasting. That kind of life is not built by trying to create it independently, but by receiving it from Jesus.

It is easy to assume that more control, more progress, or more independence will lead to a better outcome. But often, trying to build life on your own terms leads to frustration, because it places the weight on you to make everything work. Over time, that becomes exhausting.

Jesus speaks about something different. Not a life that depends on constant effort to hold everything together, but a life that flows from being connected to Him. That does not remove responsibility, but it changes the source. Instead of striving to create something meaningful, you begin to live from what He has already made available.

JOHN 15:11 (ESV) says, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

That shows that what Jesus offers is not surface-level. It reaches deeper than circumstances, deeper than temporary satisfaction, and deeper than anything that can be built through effort alone. It is a life that is sustained, not something that fades as situations change.

There can be a pull to go back to what feels familiar, to rely on your own way of doing things, or to take control again when things feel uncertain. But that often leads back to the same place, trying to manage what was never meant to be carried alone.

Abundant life is not found in doing more.

It is found in staying close to the One who gives it.

And as that connection deepens, what once felt empty begins to take on meaning, because it is no longer being built alone.
