WHERE DOES MY CONFIDENCE COME FROM?

2 CORINTHIANS 3:4–5 (ESV)

“Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.”

PROVERBS 3:5–6 (ESV)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Confidence is something everyone builds their life on, whether they realise it or not. The question is not if confidence exists, but where it comes from. Many place confidence in themselves, in their ability, their thinking, their control, or how things appear to be going. But that kind of confidence is unstable because it is tied to circumstances, and circumstances change.

2 CORINTHIANS 3:4–5 (ESV) makes it clear, “our sufficiency is from God.” That means confidence is not meant to be built on self. It is not found in having everything together or being able to figure everything out. It comes through Christ. When confidence is rooted in Him, it is no longer dependent on how strong a person feels, but on who God is.

There is a tendency to rely on understanding, to try and make sense of everything before moving forward. But PROVERBS 3:5–6 (ESV) challenges that directly, “do not lean on your own understanding.” That does not mean thinking is ignored, it means it is not the foundation. Trust becomes the foundation.

When confidence is built on self, pressure increases. There is always a need to perform, to get things right, to stay in control. But when confidence is built on God, that pressure begins to lift. Direction does not come from having all the answers, it comes from acknowledging Him.

That changes how decisions are made. It changes how uncertainty is handled. It changes how life is approached. Confidence is no longer fragile or easily shaken, because it is no longer built on something that shifts.

The reality is simple.

Confidence built on self will always be limited.

Confidence built on God will always be secure.

And the difference between the two will shape the direction of everything.
