NEW IDENTITY

2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 (ESV)

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

GALATIANS 2:20 (ESV)

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Identity is one of the most important things a person carries, because it shapes how they think, how they live, and the direction they move in. Many people live from an identity that has been formed by their past, their mistakes, their upbringing, or what others have said about them. Over time, that becomes normal, and it can feel like that is just who they are.

But 2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 (ESV) makes something clear, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” That means identity is not fixed to the past. It is not controlled by what has happened. When someone is in Christ, something real has changed. The old is not being managed or improved, it has passed away, and something new has come.

That is not always how it feels. There can still be thoughts, patterns, and habits that try to pull a person back into what was familiar. There can be a struggle between what has been left behind and what God is calling forward. But identity is not based on feeling, it is based on truth.

GALATIANS 2:20 (ESV) explains that shift, “it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” That means life is no longer centred on self. It is no longer driven by the old way of thinking or the old way of living. Something deeper is now at work, and that changes how life is lived out daily.

There is a choice that has to be made. A person can continue to live from an old identity, repeating patterns and staying tied to what has already been left behind, or they can begin to live from what God has said is true.

Living from a new identity does not mean everything becomes perfect overnight. It means direction changes. It means decisions begin to align with truth. It means no longer agreeing with what is old, but stepping into what is new.

The past no longer defines.

The old no longer leads.

A new identity has been given.

And learning to live from it will change everything.
