DON’T LET YOUR HEART GROW COLD

MATTHEW 24:12 (ESV)

“And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.”

One of the most dangerous things that can happen spiritually is not always obvious rebellion outwardly, but slowly allowing the heart to grow cold toward God over time. Hearts rarely become hardened all at once. It usually happens gradually through compromise, disappointment, bitterness, distraction, pride, exhaustion, unresolved hurt, or continually resisting the conviction of God.

Jesus warns in MATTHEW 24:12 (ESV) that “the love of many will grow cold.” That means it is possible for people who once burned with passion for God to slowly drift into spiritual numbness if they are not careful. A person can still attend church, still know Scripture, still appear fine outwardly, yet internally become distant from intimacy with Christ.

That is why guarding the heart matters so deeply. The world constantly pulls people toward spiritual coldness. Constant distraction weakens focus. Sin slowly hardens sensitivity. Bitterness poisons love. Pride resists surrender. Disappointment can make people withdraw from God instead of pressing closer to Him. Over time, if these things remain unchecked, spiritual passion slowly begins fading.

Many believers do not suddenly stop following God completely. They slowly drift. Prayer becomes less consistent. Time in Scripture becomes shallow. Conviction becomes easier to ignore. Worship becomes routine instead of relationship. The heart slowly becomes more familiar with distraction than with the presence of God.

Yet Jesus never intended His people to live spiritually numb. He calls people into closeness, intimacy, and relationship with Him. This is why returning quickly matters whenever the heart begins drifting, because the enemy wants people to stay spiritually cold while God continually calls His people back toward Himself before numbness fully takes over.

Jesus still restores hearts.

Still renews passion.

Still draws people back into closeness with Him.

So pay attention to the condition of your heart and do not become comfortable with spiritual distance from God. Stay close to Jesus through prayer, surrender, worship, obedience, and time in His presence, because the closer people remain to Christ, the harder it becomes for the heart to grow cold.
